'Knock 'Em Down For Ramp It Up' Bowling Fundraiser - 10/23/2010

It was all strikes at the 'Knock 'Em Down For Ramp It Up' bowling fundraiser at Sunset Lanes in Kirkwood Saturday.

The event raised money to help build wheelchair ramps for community members who can't afford them.

Officials say that fundraisers like this do more than just give those in wheelchairs a safer way to get in and out of their homes. It also gets the community to spend time together while doing something positive.

"Even in this bowling tournament, just as in the people coming out and building the wheelchair ramps, the community spirit is huge. It means so much to the community to be able to get involved, to make a difference, to set somebody free in Broome County," Greg Jenkins, co-director of the event, said.

"It will be easier for them to get in and out of their houses, and it will just make their lives a lot easier," Derek Vladescu, a ramp recipient, said.

Officials say they hope to raise about $15,000 at the event, which would allow them to build one ramp.

Hunger Walk on Fox News

28th Annual CHOW Walk Takes Over Binghamton University - 10/17/2010

The 28th annual CHOW Hunger walk strolled onto Binghamton University's campus Sunday.

"We're entering the winter months now, when the demand goes up because of higher heat bills and all of the other things people are spending money on," Ed Blaine, Director of CHOW said.

CHOW helps to feed the needy in the Southern Tier. Over 100 student and community volunteers helped set up the event.

"It's really important especially with my organization that's all about public service and community service, so something like this if we can help in any type of way, it's so important for us to reach out," Tolu Odunsi, a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, said.

Community members flooded the campus to walk the 2.5 mile course, all hoping to be one step closer to ending hunger.

Zachary Moyer walked last year, and he's back to do it again this year. He says he doesn't go without food and wants to make sure no one else does either.

"We may have food, but we need to make sure that everyone can survive," Moyer said.

Taking strides for a good cause wasn't all that was happening at the event.

Participants enjoyed music, food and dancing.

Officials say they expected over 800 walkers, and hoped to raise over $50,000.

CHOW will use the money to stock over 30 pantries throughout the county in order to prepare for the winter months. More than 3,000 people benefit from CHOW monthly.

By WBNG News
October 27, 2010

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile is spending Halloween with the Southern Tier.

The Halloweenie mobile made its first stop at the Binghamton Boys and Girls Club.
The Wiener Mobile is encouraging kids to "Trick or Treat" for canned goods.

It's part of a weeklong food drive to benefit CHOW.

Binghamton Police were also on hand to talk to kids about Halloween safety.

'We have a lot of power with the Wienermobile to spread good news, so that's what we want to know. We could hear the kids screaming instead, how excited they were. To bring a smile to their faces is our main goal..." says Maria Loida, a Hot Dogger with the Oscar Mayer Weiner.

If you want to tour the inside of the Wiener Mobile, it will make several stops around our area through the weekend.

And if you bring a canned good to donate to CHOW, you could win a ride in the giant hot dog.

Wednesday evening, the Weinermobile will be at the Manley's Mighty Mart on East Main Street in Endicott from 6:30 until 8:30 pm.

On Thursday, look for the giant hot dog at the Endicott Price Chopper on North Street. It will be there from 1:00 until 6:00 pm.

Then, on Friday, it will ride into Binghamton. You can check it out at the Manley's Mighty Mart on Front Street from noon until 2:00 pm.

Later that night, you can find it outside of the Binghamton Senator's Game, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.

On Saturday, the Weinermobile gets into the Halloween spirit. It will be at the Discovery Center on Morgan Road in Binghamton that morning, from 10 am until 1:30 pm.

The Binghamton Police Department will also be on hand to teach kids about Halloween safety.

Then that afternoon, you can watch the giant hot dog in action, riding down Court Street in downtown Binghamton, for the city's Halloween Parade.

Saturday evening, it heads to the Bearcats Sport Complex at Binghamton University.

Look for it at the Binghamton Bearcat Soccer Game from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

On Sunday afternoon, the Weinermobile will visit the winner's neighborhoods.

That's where kids will be able to "Trick or Treat" for canned goods.

At 7:00pm, it will be at the CHOW Warehouse.

CHOW Hunger Walk Raises $55,000

Print Story Published: 10/20 4:25 pm ShareThisUpdated: 10/20 4:29 pmFrom Broome County Council of Churches:

The 28th Annual CHOW Hunger Walk raised more than $45,000, one of its largest-ever walks—in dollars and walkers. Sponsorships of the event amounted to an additional $10,500 for a total of $55,674.

“I think people in Broome County are very much aware of the needs of the less fortunate, and responded enthusiastically at the walk to help us meet these needs,” Deacon Edward Blaine, CHOW (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse) program director, said. “Demand for food is up about 25% over last year at this time—this support will help greatly.”

In addition to the $55,674 raised, walkers collected 1,620 pounds of food for the CHOW pantries.

Nearly 1,000 people participated in the walk on Sunday, Oct. 17, one of the larger crowds in recent years. Any walker who collected at least $50 received a free CHOW Hunger Walk tee-shirt.

The Hunger Walk is one of the major fund-raising events for CHOW, one of several programs operated by the Broome County Council of Churches. Walkers covered a 2.5-mile course around the Binghamton University campus, then headed back to the gathering area near the East Gym for food, beverages, games and entertainment. Several student organizations, fraternities and sororities helped with registration, setup and cleanup to make the event a success.

Walkers participated as individuals or with a group. The top groups, according to money collected, were:

--Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, middle school-aged youth group, with nearly 300 walkers, $8,747

--Tabernacle United Methodist Church, $2,664

--St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, $2,015

--Church of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, $1,248

--Endwell United Methodist Church, $1,004

--Vestal United Methodist Church, $1,000.

Additional money is expected to be donated between now and the end of the year in support of the Hunger Walk, according to Deacon Blaine. All the money is used to build up food inventories for the winter, typically a busy time for CHOW. CHOW feeds about 3,000 people each month, about half of them children.

Restaurant Week Donation

CHOW Receives Donation

By WBNG News
October 15, 2010

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton's Fall Restaurant Week makes triple the amount of money than it did from its first event.

The city raised more $3-thousand dollars which was donated to the Community Hunger Outreach Program, or CHOW.

About 10 restaurants participated in the week long event including Lost Dog and the Flan Club.

Business was drawn from special 3 course lunch and dinner meals that were either $8 or $20.

Joe Sellepack says the donation will help feed families as the holiday season approaches.

"Our food bill part of the budget for CHOW has been hit pretty hard this year especially given the fact that the state budget and some of the cuts that were made did impact CHOW this year, this money is going to be put to really good use." said Joe Sellepack

The restaurant week held this past spring raised about $2-thousand dollars for the Binghamton Boys and Girls Club.
