'Knock 'Em Down For Ramp It Up' Bowling Fundraiser - 10/23/2010

It was all strikes at the 'Knock 'Em Down For Ramp It Up' bowling fundraiser at Sunset Lanes in Kirkwood Saturday.

The event raised money to help build wheelchair ramps for community members who can't afford them.

Officials say that fundraisers like this do more than just give those in wheelchairs a safer way to get in and out of their homes. It also gets the community to spend time together while doing something positive.

"Even in this bowling tournament, just as in the people coming out and building the wheelchair ramps, the community spirit is huge. It means so much to the community to be able to get involved, to make a difference, to set somebody free in Broome County," Greg Jenkins, co-director of the event, said.

"It will be easier for them to get in and out of their houses, and it will just make their lives a lot easier," Derek Vladescu, a ramp recipient, said.

Officials say they hope to raise about $15,000 at the event, which would allow them to build one ramp.
